Das Beispiel der Abhandlungen über das Freitagsgebet (Discussions of Shi’ite scholars about juristic foundations of legality in the early Safavid period. The example of the treatises on the Friday prayer), Würzburg: Ergon-Verlag 2010, ISBN 978-3-89913-741-5, ISSN 1436-8072)

In the book the author deals with the treatises on the status of the Friday prayer in the time of the Major Occultation written by three Shi’ite scholars in the early Safavid period (starting from the beginning till the mid of the 16th century).

The discussions about the obligation to absolve the Friday prayer are taken as an example for the changing religious and political ideas with the declaration of Shi’ism as official religion of the Safavid Empire in 1501. In the disquisitions written by scholars from Jabal ‘Amil –
today’s Southern Lebanon – new concepts and ideas were discussed; these reveal the changing status of the scholars within the Twelver Shi’a community. At the same time these transformations produced new dynamics of interaction with the Sunnite law schools as well as changes in the relationship to political power; both aspects turned out to be groundbreaking for the further developments of the Twelfer Shi’a.

The Safavid rulers were the first great dynasty to assert direct Shi’ite ancestry and legitimacy.

As such they positioned themselves as immediate competitors to the Ottoman Empire by challenging its claim to be the sole Islamic (Sunni) representative. For the first time the Shi’a had the chance to declare its own representation within the borders of a manifested Shi’ite empire. These historic circumstances brought a profound change in the self-conception of the Shi’ite scholars both in the Safavid and in the Ottoman Empire. The book clarifies these changes by analyzing the then newly arising legal discussions which illuminate the changing status and perception of the Shi’a in general and the scholars in particular.
